Search Queries
A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates it. That provider processes the request and supplies any result. South Carolina Criminal History does not retain or log those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email or other direct message may be kept long enough to respond and maintain necessary correspondence. It remains within the operating team unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, standard server records may capture technical details about the visit:

No Criminal-Record Data on File
South Carolina Criminal History does not maintain, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Its content identifies official access routes through SLED Criminal Justice Information Services, the South Carolina Department of Corrections, the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry, state courts, and local offices in all 46 counties. The website is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor data is not turned into a consumer report or a record about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information submitted to a box is governed by that provider's privacy policy, retention rules, and disclosure practices. Those terms are outside our control and should be reviewed before a search is submitted.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to South Carolina agencies, court systems, county offices, legal resources, or commercial search services. Once a visitor leaves this website, the destination's privacy policy applies. Review it before providing personal information.
Some advertising companies may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select targeted advertisements.

Rights may differ based on the visitor's residence and the law that applies. The South Carolina Freedom of Information Act, S.C. Code Title 30, Chapter 4, governs access to records held by public bodies, while S.C. Code §23-3-115 governs SLED's dissemination of individual criminal histories. Those laws do not turn this private site into a government records custodian. Subject to applicable law, a visitor may:
- Request deletion of eligible personal data
- Ask what personal information is held
- Seek correction of inaccurate personal information
- Object to certain processing when the law provides that right
