Questions about official South Carolina criminal records belong with the government office that keeps the requested item. South Carolina Criminal History is a private reference site, not a records counter. Statewide history questions may go to SLED, while court documents, booking files, warrants, and police reports often remain with a court or agency in one of the state's 46 counties. The routes below identify the correct starting point for each record type.

This Is Not a Government Office. South Carolina Criminal History cannot retrieve official records, conduct a government background check, correct or remove a record, or receive an expungement filing. Contact the responsible public office directly.

Need an Official Record?

Use these South Carolina offices and official systems as the starting points:

  • Criminal histories and rap sheets: contact the SLED Criminal Justice Information Services repository
  • Court case files: review South Carolina criminal court cases and contact the clerk for the court that heard the matter
  • State prisoner status: use the South Carolina Department of Corrections Inmate Search
  • Incident and police reports: request the record from the sheriff, police department, SLED, or other agency that created it
  • Expungement: begin with the circuit solicitor for a General Sessions matter or the Magistrate or Municipal Court that handled a summary charge
  • County records: locate the relevant sheriff, detention center, or court through the county directory

For statewide criminal history checks, contact the SLED Public Dissemination Unit at 803-896-1443 during its published weekday hours. Mail requests go to SLED Records Department, P.O. Box 21398, Columbia, SC 29221-1398. SLED states that walk-in criminal-record requests are not accepted.
